Cost-of-living pressures adding stress to back-to-school prep

As families gear up for the new school year, rising cost-of-living pressures are leaving many children without essentials like uniforms and home internet.

Research from child protection organisation, Act for Kids, reveals almost 1 in 3 Australians struggle to afford basic educational needs like stationery, books and school fees.

The survey of nearly 1000 parents also reveals that over a quarter (27%) face challenges in paying for internet access, while 40% are unable to afford extracurricular activities like sport, music or other hobbies, which have huge positive benefits when it comes to children’s growth, development and wellbeing.

Act for Kids CEO Dr Katrina Lines highlights the emotional toll this takes on both children and parents.

“It is common for children to experience some form of anxiety about heading back to the classroom as this often involves change, whether that be a new school, teacher or meeting new classmates,” says Dr Lines.

“It can be quite distressing if, on top of this, they’re worried about not having the right uniform or whether they will have the materials to complete school work including homework.”

Dr Lines acknowledges the pressure parents are under to provide a stable environment.

“If your family is facing these challenges, it’s so important to share the burden by seeking help from your child’s school, community organisations and government support services,” she says.

  • Explore payment plans: Contact schools to discuss flexible options.
  • Utilise rebates: State governments and local MPs may offer grants or rebates.
  • Communicate with your child: Acknowledge their concerns and discuss their feelings about starting the year.

How community pharmacies can help

Community pharmacies are uniquely positioned to support families during this challenging time.

Offering budget-friendly essentials like stationery, lunchboxes and water bottles offer convenient and affordable solutions.

Pharmacists and pharmacy assistants can also assist by offering advice and programs on managing stress and anxiety for both parents and children, as well as recommending OTC products such as VMS supplements to support children’s health during the school year.
