GUEST CONTRIBUTOR 43 Symptoms The symptoms for allergic reactions to mould are the same signs and symptoms of other upper respiratory allergies or allergic rhinitis. • • • • • These can include: Watery eyes; Runny or stuffy nose; Sneezing; Cough from postnasal drip; Dry, itchy or irritated skin. While the common signs and symptoms will be present, there may need to be further testing involved, such as a skin prick test or blood tests, to confirm that mould is causing the reaction. If there is a pre-existing respiratory condition, such as asthma, exposure to certain moulds can trigger severe asthma attacks, so be on the lookout for coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness. Suggested Treatments While it’s best to speak with your pharmacist or pharmacy assistant about treatment options, some of the suggested treatment options may include: • Oral antihistamines; • Nasal corticosteroids; • Decongestant tablets and nasal sprays; • Saline sprays and rinses; • Topical steroidal creams; • pH balance washes and lotions; • Vitamin C, garlic and horseradish. Prevention • Any mould that has formed in and around the home should be immediately removed by a professional. • Ensure any surfaces that have come into contact with water, especially flood waters, are thoroughly cleaned and dried, or even replaced if needed. • Wear a dust mask and gloves when performing cleaning duties or yard work after heavy rains or flooding. • Lower your indoor humidity by using a dehumidifier. This will help prevent any mould from occurring and may help stop the spread of existing mould but will not eliminate it. • Stay away from humidifiers and air-conditioners. Instead, invest in an allergy friendly ducted air control system. • Clean out gutters of leaves, as this will also assist with overflow in heavy downpours.
