                  62 LITTLE LEGENDS
 EQUIPPING PARENTS WITH
FIRST AID KNOW-HOW
While injuries are part of life, this month, we take a closer look at what parents need to keep their little legends safe and injury-free – or what they need to help their little ones recover from an inevitable injury.
ABy Margaret Mielczarek.
ccording to Pharmacy Assistant Emma Smallbone, from Zammitt Street Pharmacy in Deception Bay,
Queensland, while getting injured is part of life, equipping kids with the know- how to handle injuries is important.
“When it comes to kids, anything can happen, and being prepared is crucial,” she said.
Pointing out that some of the common injuries seen in retail pharmacy among children include “grazed knees, hands and elbows, sprained wrists and ankles, dirt/debris in eyes”, she adds that parents should “educate kids on the right safety precautions to take”.
“Talking your kids through the first aid process for wounds and injuries when they’re being treated helps them to understand why first aid is important,” Ms Smallbone said.
Kids can also experience scalds and burns, cuts and abrasions, and “bruises from knocks and falls”, says Pharmacy Assistant Bryan Hann from Midland Pharmacy and Compounding Centre
in Midland, WA. He adds that “while
an accident can happen anywhere, most injuries to young children happen at home”.
“Simply learning first aid and knowing what to do in a situation is critical
and can even be lifesaving,” he said. “We can’t always prevent accidents from happening, but having an
understanding of what to do within a certain situation if it arises is imperative.”
The meaning of first aid
It’s clear equipping yourself with first aid know-how is essential with little legends running around the place. However, what does it mean when we speak of first aid?
“First aid means taking immediate action to help someone who’s been injured, is involved in an accident or has a medical emergency,” Mr Hann said.
“Whether it’s a baby, child or adult in need of care, the purpose of first aid is to keep someone alive, protect them from further harm, and do what you can to help them recover.”
