6 EDITOR’S LETTER EDITOR’S LETTER O ne of my favourite literary quotes is Charles Dickens’ infamous line from his timeless classic, A Tale of Two Cities: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.” There is no better way to sum up 2020. There has never been a need for hope like there is now. Recognising the need for hope in a world that has been left “powerless in the face of great adversity”, Vogue has brought “all the global editions together around this optimistic, human, forward-looking theme” – hope. “We all need hope in our lives, now more than ever,” Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour is quoted as saying. Without hope there is no future – hope gives us the strength to carry on. While lockdown measures remain in some states, the hope of returning to a new normal is starting to peak through in others. An example of this has been the resumption of public sporting events, albeit under strict CovidSafe plans, in some states. With this in mind, we take a look at the best way to fuel increased physical activity and fun runs or other sporting events (page 34-37). As an avid endurance junkie, one thing I have learnt from sport is the ability to endure. Much like an event such as Ironman triathlon or half marathon – getting through this pandemic has required endurance and resilience. An athlete, mum of two and entrepreneur who exemplifies the power of endurance and a positive, can-do attitude is professional Ironman triathlete, Beth McKenzie who shares with us her story over overcoming the many challenges 2020 has thrown our way, while staying positive and maintaining hope for a better 2021 (pages 20-23). Small business owner, triathlon coach, dad and qualified dietitian, Scott Farrell makes the connection between traits required to be a competitive athlete with traits that are also required to be a successful leader in life and in the workplace (pages 24-27). Speaking of small business, we celebrated National Family Business Day on 18 September 2020, and we were (and continue to be) encouraged to help our local community by buying local. Family and local businesses, like retail pharmacies, are the lifeblood of the community. So, we would love to encourage you to support your local community pharmacy by buying local. We also encourage you to continue supporting your local pharmacy staff who have worked tirelessly to help us all get through 2020. I’ve said it before: To all of you on the frontline, our tireless retail pharmacy assistants, we are forever grateful for all the hard work that you have done and continue to do for your communities. Words don’t do justice to how much gratitude I, we, have for you all. Thank you.
