W ho is your eyebrow idol? We all secretly (or not so secretly) have one. Whether it be Audrey Hepburn’s thick, dark and bold brows in the 60s, or Kate Moss’s pencil thin 90s brows, trends in brows have played a huge role in beauty. Eyebrows frame the face and have the ability to change your look with a few plucks here and there. Pharmacy assistant Sharni Rossow knows how important brow care is from the extensive level of related products available in a pharmacy. “I believe brows have become a very popular feature in today’s beauty trends,” she said. “People are always making sure they’re getting them perfectly shaped, tinted, laminated or even cosmetically tattooed.” While different styles call for different processes, in this feature we look at some of the most popular brow trends around. as I find these are the easiest to work with,” Ms Rossow said. Retail pharmacies are home to an array of eyebrow pencils, with all kinds of shades, and at affordable prices. One of my best friends throughout high school wasn’t a human, alas, but a Manicare lash/brow brush tool. The two- sided brush can separate lashes as well as groom the eyebrow hairs, which will help create the ‘feathery textured’ look as mentioned above by Vogue. If customers are still concerned about their level of brow care knowledge, and a pencil seems too daunting, powders are very usable as well. I once found a colour from an eye shadow palette that I owned, which matched the same colour as my brows, so I was using that religiously. Using a powder for brows allows the person applying it to have more control over how dark or light the brows become, and mistakes can easily be corrected as powder is generally not too strong a formula. Or go for gold The ‘high and bright’ trend mentioned above essentially brightens underneath the brow. Products such as brow-lift and highlighting pencils are available in retail pharmacies, being used to draw a line directly below the brow, creating a highlighted line. To chase the ‘straight tails’ trend, pharmacies provide many different styles of tweezers that can help achieve this goal, with the only major differences between the various types being size and grip. For customers wanting to completely up their game, brands such as Australis BEAUTY BUZZ 53 offer a brow kit that contains not only tweezers, but also brow powder, wax and highlighter. DIY tinting If customers are looking, perhaps, for something drastically different in terms of tinting, but don’t want to pull out the big bucks, such products are available in pharmacy, says Ms Rossow. “I usually like to recommend the brow tinting sets, if they’re advanced, as these can save money – instead of going into the salons – and are good in isolating times,” she said 1000 Hour sells an Eyelash & Brow Dye Kit in pharmacies that can provide a salon treatment styled darkened colour for less than the cost of a salon visit. The process can be carried out at home, with the product promoted as being quick and easy to use, safe and effective, and including 12 applications per pack. Ms Rossow points out the importance of pharmacy assistants being well informed about products in the beauty aisle. She says pharmacy assistants are well trained when it comes to over- the-counter medications, first aid, ear/ eye care, digestive health, vitamins and supplements, etc., so are confident in selling customers the correct product. “I think it’s somewhat important that we also have some makeup knowledge, to some extent, to ensure we can cater and give our best customer service to the required field of customers,” she said. Keep an eye out for the next issue of Retail Pharmacy Assistants magazine, as we follow this up in an exploration of the different types of brow care treatments available. People are always making sure they’re getting them perfectly shaped, tinted, laminated or even cosmetically tattooed.” Some of the more recent trends, according to Vogue magazine and Benefit Cosmetics national brow artist Hannah Mutze, include: Feathery texture.“For the faint of heart, think lush, mussed up texture with a laissez-faire approach,” Vogue quoted Ms Mutze as saying. High and bright. “This trend is as easy as swiping a slick of highlight onto the brow bone, just under the arch of your brow, and blending.” Straight tail. “A facelift in an instant. It’s all about lifting the brow’s focus up and out, tapering into a point towards the temples of the face.” For some, going to a salon or brow expert can be too expensive, but luckily enough, a retail pharmacy, among other outlets, holds plenty of beauty products that are helpful in the brow game and affordable. “In pharmacy we have a range of brow care products in-store,” Ms Rossow said, citing brow/lash tinting kits, pencils, powder, pomades, temporary tattoo gels, and the makeup tools to apply them (brushes, spoolies, stencils etc.).
