6 EDITOR’S LETTER
EDITOR’S
W LETTER
ith everything 2020 has thrown at us (bushfires,
a pandemic), it’s hard to believe we’re only halfway through the year. While it’s been the start to 2020 that none of us were expecting (social media posts
saying something to the effect of: ‘who knew that 2020 planners
were going to be pointless’ have provided some much-needed light relief) it’s been a year that has shone the spotlight on the dedicated and selfless industry that is retail pharmacy – and all of you within
it. Perhaps a silver lining to all of the challenges that we’ve endured
so far this year, is that these unprecedent times have forced us all
to take stock, reset and set new priorities and goals for the rest of 2020 and beyond. There’s no better time to set new goals (both personal and professional) than on the cusp of a new financial year. Thinking about the last six months, and the next six that follow, brings to mind an article I read recently on micro goals – so goals, just smaller. The article alluded to the fact that people often feel happier and more motivated when they have something to look forward to. Take a holiday, for example. The anticipation of a holiday often brings more excitement than the holiday itself (although, that’s not to say that the said holiday is unenjoyable). This explains why so many people book another holiday so soon on return to work. It’s not that they
don’t want to be back, it’s that there is joy in the anticipation. Now, the author of the article did state that you don’t necessarily have to go and book a holiday to feel this excitement – it’s all about setting smaller, micro goals across your week and your day to have that sense of
joy and satisfaction when that goal is complete (let’s face it, there’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of ticking off that goal list as well). So, as you think about the next six months and as you think about your goals (both personal and professional) – whether it be upskilling in a certain area of retail pharmacy, or completing a CPD unit or putting
in a nomination to the 2020 PATY Award (page 8), whatever it might be – remember to set smaller goals along the way. Hopefully, setting small goals each day and week will also take your mind off how cold it is outside – that’s right, winter is definitely here. With the cold weather often comes dry skin and your lips also cop the brunt of the elements. This month we provide advice on how to keep your lips pout-worthy this winter (pages 12-13). We speak with the inspiring Kirsten Prins from Wigs on Wheels Melbourne, who is changing the lives of women one wig at a time (pages 18-21). We explore the lesser known world of scleroderma (pages 28-41) and find out what the word ‘natural’ really means on a product label (pages 52-55). It’s another issue filled with inspiration and learning, and we hope you enjoy reading it as much as we have enjoyed putting it together. So, grab your tea, hot chocolate or a cheeky mulled wine and enjoy! And remember: if there’s anything you’d like us to write about or a topic you want us to cover – please reach out and let me know. I’m only an email away.
