This month we look at one of the most common conditions affecting Australians, type 2 diabetes, and chat with the 2019 Pharmacy Assistant of the Year Award state and territory winners about the best ways to manage the condition and the products available in retail pharmacy that can assist customers with keeping their blood glucose levels under control.

What are your tips for managing healthy blood sugar levels to
help prevent the negative health outcomes associated with poor blood sugar control, such as peripheral neuropathy? What can customers
do to keep their blood sugar levels
in check?
It’s really important for diabetics
to make healthy lifestyle choices. Using the diabetes nurses and dietitians available to them through the NDSS will help them get a good understanding of how to manage their condition. Getting active to the best of their ability and avoiding long periods of being immobile throughout
the day will also help to keep their circulation moving.
What are the products available in a retail pharmacy that can assist customers with keeping their blood sugar levels under control?
Using a good blood glucose monitor
is an obvious step in helping with the monitoring of their blood sugar levels. The Contour Next One is great as it has a stop-light function with the different coloured light indicating if the reading
is good or not. There are also vitamin supplements to help to support the body to metabolise carbohydrates and stop sugar cravings, which can be beneficial. This is an area I always like to involve my pharmacist in, so that our customer knows they’re getting all possible advice available to them.
