“The trapping of bacteria and sweat in the pores can enlarge pores over time and cause blackheads, while the trapping of heat can flare temperature- sensitive conditions such as rosacea, ultimately causing redness and uneven skin tone,” New York-based Dermatologist Rachel Nazarian told Health.com.
The message is simple: remove your makeup before exercising.
A wide variety of makeup removal products are available at a pharmacy.
One of the most successful ingredients in makeup removal products is micellar water.
Micellar water isn’t just regular water. It does contain water, but it’s also full of suspended oil particles known as micelles (Healthline, 2020).
“Think of micelles as molecules that can attach to dirt and oil on one side and water on the other,” US-based Dermatologist Dr Erum Ilyas said
to Healthline.
The combination ensures that
impurities are wiped away, and the skin is hydrated.
“By drawing away impurities by attracting them to the molecules suspended in the water solution, micellar water is less likely to dry out and irritate the skin,” Dr Ilyas told Healthline.
Too rushed to wash hair?
Naturally, sweat not only builds up on the skin, but in the scalp and hair as well. Those who have long or thick hair will know the feeling of sweat dripping down their back after a long or intense workout.
For those who prefer exercising in the morning or who don’t have time in the evening to wash their hair before going to bed, it can be a real struggle to ensure that their hair doesn’t feel dirty or uncomfortable.
The follicles on the head don’t only sprout hair, they also produce sebum – the natural oil that softens the scalp and gives hair texture (Healthline, 2019).
Although sebum serves an important purpose, it also collects oil and sweat from the scalp.
Speaking with Lauren Cahn from thehealthy.com (2019), Dermatologist
Dr Tsippora Shainhouse, a clinical instructor at the University of Southern California, adds that “when you don’t wash your hair often enough, natural oils, dirt and product residue build up on
your roots and scalp”. This may cause you to itch and scratch.
“When the sweat on your scalp dries, it can irritate the skin, leaving it feeling itchy,” she said.
In circumstances where there is
not enough time to give hair a full
wash, dry shampoo can be beneficial.
It uses alcohols or starch-based active ingredients to soak up the oils and sweat from the hair – it removes the oils to ensure a cleaner appearance.
Many dry shampoos also include a fragrance, so will allow the hair to smell cleaner too (Healthline, 2020).

No one wants to be the person that people walk past and pull a face at because they can smell their body odour.
Exercising can increase people’s chances of producing an unpleasant scent.
Body odour is caused by bacteria breaking down sweat and is largely linked to the apocrine glands, which are found in the breasts, genital area, eyelids, armpits and ears.
These glands are mainly responsible for body odour because the sweat they produce is high in protein,
which bacteria can break down easily (MedicalNewsToday, 2009).
Short term solutions to mask body odour include using an antiperspirant or deodorant.
Antiperspirants contain aluminium- based compounds that temporarily block sweat pores, therefore reducing the amount of perspiration that reaches the skin (Mayo Clinic, 2019).
Deodorants can eliminate odour
but not perspiration. They are usually alcohol-based and turn the skin acidic, making it less attractive to bacteria. Deodorants often contain perfume fragrances intended to mask the smell (Mayo Clinic, 2019).

“These products have benefits by making it super simple and easy to clean yourself during the day, after exercising, in the morning and to feel refreshed,” retail pharmacy assistant Ms Seaton said.
Consumers are often likely to buy beauty products such as these at a pharmacy, due to affordable prices, she adds.
“However, I also believe that because pharmacists are trained on a chemical basis – how the ingredients work – people trust the knowledge behind recommendations,” Ms Seaton said.

Top tips on using dry shampoo
• Hold the can of dry shampoo about 16cm from the crown of the head.
• Spray a small amount directly into the roots, without neglecting the nape, right above the ears and in the back of the head.
• Massage the dry shampoo into hair, using fingers (Healthline 2020).
