Covid-19 and pregnancy: what does the science say?

As the Covid-19 pandemic continues its global hold, science is emerging to help us understand the effects of the virus during pregnancy.

A systematic review published in the Australia New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics Gynaecology has found that Covid-19 infection in pregnancy is often asymptomatic with severe and critical disease rates similar to those in the general population.

After looking at a total of 60 articles, researchers also found that transmission to babies does appear possible, although it remains unclear whether babies are infected in the womb, during birth or after being born.

While the study sheds some light on what potentially happens when a pregnant woman is infected with the virus, the authors recommend that more research is needed to completely understand the effects of Covid-19 during pregnancy, especially when infection occurs early in or in mid-pregnancy.
