Approach mental health proactively during lockdown

Young Victorians are being called on by mental health experts to be proactive about their mental health throughout Victoria’s latest Covid-19 lockdown and to seek support if they need it.

“Being in lockdown once again represents a range of challenges for young people in Victoria,” says CEO of ReachOut Ashley de Silva.

“We know that since the beginning of 2020, Covid-19 restrictions have had a disproportionate impact on the lives of young people, in particular when it comes to the stress of uncertainty, job losses and concern about the future.

“We know many young people in Victoria are understandably feeling worried, stressed and frustrated right now.”

Ms de Silva adds that a strategy to employ during this challenging time is to focus on “the things that helped them through previous lockdowns”.

“In 2020, young people demonstrated incredibly resilience and determination despite the challenges,” she says.

“Taking a proactive approach to looking after your mental health can have a huge impact on how you feel during and also after lockdown.

“It’s okay not to feel okay. Support is available right now. ReachOut.com is available for free 24/7 for young people where they can get tips, hear stories and join peer support forums.”
