Funded Community Pharmacy Training in Tasmania

Media Release

24 February, 2020

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia is proud to be facilitating fully subsidised pharmacy assistant training for eligible job seekers in Launceston.

The part time course commenced on the 17 of February 2020 and will run for 11 weeks. 14 local job seekers will complete two face-to-face training days a week, plus added placement days in a pharmacy.

Pharmacy assistants play a vital role in delivering health services to the community, supporting pharmacists on the frontline of patient care.

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Tasmanian Branch Manager Monique Mackrill said the program provides graduates with the skills and experience necessary to successfully start their career in community pharmacy.

SIR20116 Certificate II in Community Pharmacy covers the key foundations for those looking to start a career in pharmacy.

“Graduates are trained in interacting with customers, communicating in the workplace, merchandising, stock control procedures and entry-level product knowledge”, Ms Mackrill said.

Once employed, there are opportunities for graduates to specialise in particular roles in the pharmacy by completing additional training.

“There are many career pathways available to pharmacy assistants, including dispensary assistant, vitamin consultant, hair and beauty consultant, stock control manager or retail pharmacy manager”, said Ms Mackrill.

Graduates will also receive employment support from the Pharmacy Guild, within the course via training and practical tips, and through promotion of the job seekers on the Guild’s channels.

In addition to this funded course, the Pharmacy Guild is also conducting community pharmacy training for school-aged students at Burnie High School.
